South Sudan: President Salva Kiir Dissolves Parliament

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir recently made the announcement that he will be dissolving parliament as part of a peace agreement.

Previously, the landlocked north African country was embroiled in a civil war that started in 2013. Now, the hope of a new set of Members of Parliament offers a fresh future for the war-torn nation.

The 69-year-old incumbent made the televised move on Saturday, 8 May, as part of a long-anticipated peace treaty that was first promised in 2018.

The agreement states that the legislative house must have 550 lawmakers from all political parties.

As for when this new parliament is set to commence, no date has been given. However, many political observers hope that the deal will undo the five years of distrust and violence that erupted between supporters of Kiir and his then vice-president, Riek Machar.

Kiir’s spokesman, Ateny Wek Ateny, said: “The new body will be formed in a matter of time, not too long.”
